Lorenzo Azzi, Ph.D.
Dr. Azzi recognizes that he has had the overwhelmingly good fortune to be mentored by some of the top experts in the field of Infancy and Early Childhood. He has recently made it a mission of his to share as much of this invaluable knowledge about the social/emotional/psychological needs of babies and young children with as many parents as possible, to help them provide their babies with the best possible start to life.
Dr. Azzi received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2001 from Illinois Tech, where he studied and participated in numerous research projects for 5 years in a Child Development laboratory. From there, Dr. Azzi went on to Tulane University Health Sciences Center for his Internship in Child Psychology. It was there that Dr. Azzi was introduced to the field of Infant Mental Health, working under internationally renowned experts in the field, including Dr. Charles Zeanah III, Dr. Julie Larrieu, Dr. Neil Boris, Dr. Michael Scheeringa, Dr. Sherry Heller, Dr. Anna Smyke, and many others. It soon became clear to Dr. Azzi that what happens in those first few years of life, which too often get overlooked by most mental health professionals, are BY FAR the most critical for long-term social, emotional, psychological, and physical well-being.
Dr. Azzi stayed on at the Tulane Health Sciences Center – Infant Team for a full-time Post-Doctoral Fellowship and subsequently joined as Adjunct Faculty at the Tulane Health Sciences Center while serving as the Psychologist for two different Infant Mental Health teams that were part of a statewide initiative in Louisiana’s Early Childhood Supports and Services network.
In 2006, Dr. Azzi relocated to Arizona and took a position at Southwest Human Development, where he provided therapy to young children aged 0-5 and their families, supervised over a dozen therapists, and provided consultation to a number of different programs that serve babies, young children, and their parents/caregivers. Dr. Azzi also served as core faculty for the Harris Training Institute, a network of the top training institutes in the world in the field of Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health, for approximately 13 years.
In 2019, Dr. Azzi shifted to focus on providing Psychological Consultation to the AZ Department of Child Safety and continues to provide a variety of trainings to professionals in the community on various topics related to Infancy and Early Childhood.
